Looking for Your Best

Greetings... My wife and I are taking a road trip from Madison, Wisconsin to Winnipeg, Manitoba during an extended weekend around the weekend of July 26th. We're interested in seeing the sights and experiencing the uniqueness of part of the Midwest U.S. and Central Canada. So where are the best places to go, things to do, places to eat, etc.? Do you have favorites, be they off the beaten path or well-known local commodities? Please let us know where your favorites are... and maybe you'll find some others have recommendations for you, too!

Our itinerary:
We have a loose schedule over 5 days around the weekend of 7/26/08. We plan to drive on I-94 West from Madison to Fargo, ND. Then North on I-29 to the border and straight up on 75 to Winnipeg. We may camp and stay in hotels along the way; hopefully we'll also get to take a trip to Lake Winnipeg. Diversions, alternate routes, points of interest would all be welcome.

Questions about us? Ask questions in the "About Us" thread. If you want to tailor your thoughts to a particular "type" of couple, we'll see if we can give you more info.

Thanks in advance!

You have got to go to GG Gelati for the best Gelato & Sorbetto you will ever have in your life!!! Plus the Italian district of Corydon is interesting to walk around in too.

Here's their website with address:

Also, forgot to mention ...

... you probably already know this because you mentioned Lake Winnipeg, but Grand Beach is a neat place too (who would have expected a nice beach in the middle of Canada!!!)

Any questions on Canada or Winnipeg just ask ... we're from there originally.

Thanks, ndborn! I appreciate the tips. We're definitely looking forward to the Gelato at least!

If you're into burgers and fries, my personal favorite is a local chain called Burger Time located on Division St and 4th Ave N. Generous proportions for fantastic low-cut prices.

There's a popular heat-attack inducing burger joint on East St Germaine and Lincoln Ave but can't remember the name. It's a small stand next to a auto exhaust repair store.

Then there's another Somali restaurant (not Mediterranean) in St Cloud but the hygiene factor is questionable. No one likes to sing Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" when they're on a roadtrip.
